KEY STAGE 1 and 2 SCIENCE: LONG TERM PLANS

Swell and Longborough Primary Schools

KEY STAGE 1 SCIENCE: LONG TERM PLAN

A yearly plan has been devised which must include differentiation between module tasks and objectives for Y1 and Y2 children. Every child will have a ‘working scientifically’ tracking sheet at the front of their science books. This will guide planning and teaching to set appropriately challenging tasks for children. Module learning ladders will allow self-assessment and teacher assessment to monitor knowledge and understanding and provide feedback.

There will be a brief introduction of year 3 and 4 modules within the ‘Materials’ taught section of term to ensure progression and allow key ideas to be introduced (light / forces).

The ‘seasonal change’ module has been divided across the year, with every child having a separate book to record information, seek patterns, analyse data and allow opportunities to record and discuss global weather phenomena and events. The first lesson of every term is suggested as a benchmark (completion of weather tree and discussion of season) but obviously climatic events can be unpredictable and should be discussed whenever they occur. Seasonal celebrations (Harvest/Christmas/Easter/Summer solstice) will also provide opportunities for diary entries.

Some module content has been split to streamline objectives into topics/themes. For example the ‘Animals including humans’ module has been split to ensure a ‘human’ orientated section is completed by both key stages at the same time to allow group speakers/visits to be most efficiently used.

There is also opportunity to repeat the introduction of light and forces bi-annually within the Key stage 2 long term plan (Planetarium visit and Forces module).

KEY STAGE 2 SCIENCE: LONG TERM PLAN

A two year long term plan has been devised which allows all children (Y3-6) to experience every module .Teaching will allow smaller groups (Y3/4 and Y5/6) for differentiation in module tasks and year focused objectives to be set. ‘Working scientifically’ tracking sheets attached to the front of every child’s science book will ensure appropriate challenges are set and progression in this skill can be readily observed. Module learning ladders will allow self-assessment and teacher assessment to monitor knowledge and understanding and provide feedback.
