The school celebrates World Book Day every year.
"World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. A main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own."
At Swell we celebrate the day in different ways and as well, all our children receive a World Book Day £1 Book Token. This can be exchanged for one of the six specially published World Book Day £1 Books or can be used as part of the payment for any book or audio book of their choice at a participating bookshop or book club. (See the World Book Day site for more details).
In 2015 we linked World Book Day with Book Aid International. We have been looking at stories from other countries so the children came in dressed as their favourite character from another culture and many enjoyed an Italian cooked meal. They have been tasting fruits from around the world all week. We were also lucky enough to have a visit from author Jenny Kane and Richard Kemp from the Moreton book shop.
As well as all the Junior children taking part in the 'Read For My School' initiative for the second year running, all the children created their favourite scene from a story especially for the day.
March 7th 2013 - The Junior class had a visit from author Marita Phillips, author of The Dream Dealer.
